- Day 1 Arrival in Brussels and the Grand Place
Welcome to Brussels, the heart of my dominions in the Low Countries. We will settle in before heading to the Grand-Place, where the opulence of the guilds bears witness to the wealth of these lands. A welcome dinner will introduce us to the intricate political map of the Europe I inherited.
- Day 2 The Coudenberg Palace: Setting of the Abdication
We will explore the archaeological remains of the Coudenberg Palace, the setting of my dramatic abdication. Through reconstructions and the original foundations, we will relive the moment I divided my vast empire, an act that shook Europe. An expert historian will speak to us about Habsburg politics.
- Day 3 Ghent: My Birthplace
Day trip by train to Ghent, where I was born in 1500. We will visit Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, with the font at which I was baptized, and the castle of the Counts of Flanders. We will also walk the city that rebelled against me in 1539 and on which I imposed an exemplary punishment, to understand the tension between my Flemish roots and my duties as emperor. Return to Brussels in the afternoon.
- Day 4 Aachen: The Crown of Charlemagne
Day trip by train to Aachen, across the German border, the capital of Charlemagne. In its Palatine Chapel I was crowned King of the Romans in 1520, seated on the stone throne of the first great emperor of Europe. We will discuss what it meant to claim that inheritance and how my imperial election was financed, paid for in large part by the Fugger bankers. Return to Brussels in the afternoon.
- Day 5 Journey to Bologna: The Imperial Coronation
Flight to Bologna, Italy. We will head to the Basilica of San Petronio, the exact place where Pope Clement VII crowned me Holy Roman Emperor in 1530, the last imperial coronation ever performed by a Pope.
- Day 6 Milan: The Strategic Duchy
Day trip by train to Milan, one of the most fiercely contested jewels of Italy. We will visit the Sforza Castle and discuss the strategic importance of the Duchy of Milan as a bridge between my Spanish and imperial dominions. We will see Leonardo's "The Last Supper", a masterpiece that survived the upheavals of my age. Return to Bologna in the afternoon.
- Day 7 Arrival in Madrid and the Power of Castile
Flight to Madrid. We will delve into the Madrid of the House of Austria and visit the Royal Palace, built upon the old Alcázar that was my residence. An expert will explain how the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon became the foundation of my global power and the source of the riches of the Americas.
- Day 8 Toledo: Imperial City and Heart of Spain
Excursion to Toledo, one of my imperial capitals. We will stroll through its winding streets, visiting the imposing Primate Cathedral and the Alcázar, one of my principal residences. We will discuss the uprising of the Comuneros, a rebellion that challenged my authority at the start of my reign.
- Day 9 The Monastery of Yuste: The Emperor's Retreat
Travel to the region of Extremadura to visit the Monastery of Yuste. In this tranquil place, I spent my final days. We will explore my chambers, simple yet connected to the high altar of the church, and reflect on a life's end devoted to contemplation.
- Day 10 Final Reflection and Departure
After a morning of reflection in the serene surroundings of Yuste, we will share a farewell lunch built around the local cuisine. We will discuss the complex legacy of a man who ruled two worlds. Transfer to the Madrid airport for return flights.
