Itinerary
- Day 1 Arrival in Strasbourg: Years of Exile and Experimentation
Arrival in Strasbourg, the city where I spent crucial years experimenting in secret. We will visit the Petite France district and discuss the mysterious projects I worked on, from making mirrors for pilgrims to the first prototypes of my printing press.
- Day 2 Mainz: The Cradle of Printing
Journey to Mainz, the city where it all began. After settling in, we will visit the Gutenberg Museum. Here, we will marvel at the two original Gutenberg Bibles, the crown jewels of printing. A demonstration on a replica press will show us the ingenuity of the invention.
- Day 3 Gutenberg's Workshop and the Secrets of the Craft
A guided tour of Mainz will take us to the places where Gutenberg lived and worked. In a specialized workshop, we will take part in a hands-on class in typesetting and bookbinding, experiencing firsthand the challenges of the 15th-century printer.
- Day 4 Frankfurt: The Birth of the Book Market
Day trip to Frankfurt, half an hour from Mainz, home of the most important book fair in the world, a tradition that began soon after my invention. An expert will guide us through the history of the fair and how the press created a mass market for knowledge and ideas.
- Day 5 The Reformation: The First Best-Seller of the Press
A seminar on the impact of the printing press on the Protestant Reformation. We will analyze how Luther's 95 Theses, reproduced en masse, became the first "viral" in history. We will discuss the role of the press as a tool of propaganda and religious revolution.
- Day 6 Antwerp: The Printing Center of Northern Europe
Journey to Antwerp, Belgium. We will visit the fascinating Plantin-Moretus Museum, the only Renaissance and Baroque printing house preserved in the world and a World Heritage Site. We will see the original presses, thousands of lead type pieces, and an invaluable library.
- Day 7 Cartography and Science: Mapping the New World
At the Plantin-Moretus Museum, we will focus on its role in the Age of Discovery. We will see how printers like Ortelius and Mercator used the press to create the first modern atlases, mapping a rapidly expanding world and spreading scientific discoveries.
- Day 8 The Art of Engraving and Book Illustration
Antwerp was a center for great artists like Rubens, who collaborated with printers. In an engraving workshop, we will learn the techniques of woodcut and copper engraving that made it possible to illustrate books, from botanical treatises to literary works.
- Day 9 The Counter-Reformation and the Catholic Press
Antwerp was the great workshop of the Counter-Reformation. Under a privilege granted by the papacy, Plantin and his heirs printed the liturgical books of the entire Spanish empire for more than a century. We will see those editions and discuss how the Church, which first feared the press, ended up making it its finest instrument.
- Day 10 The Legacy of the Gutenberg Galaxy and Farewell
A final reflection on the lasting impact of the printing press, from mass literacy to the birth of the public sphere and the digital age. Farewell lunch in Antwerp and transfer to the airport.
